A Power of Attorney helps to Protect yourself and your Family in the event that you lose mobility or mental capacity. Ensuring help is available with management of your affairs regarding the agencies, facilities, service providers and businesses that may require a Power of Attorney is a good way to help protect your interests.


Couple of options:


1) Have a lawyer draft a Power of Attorney for you. This is the proper way and ensures your documentation is prepared properly and in accordance with the governing laws of Manitoba.
2) Take your chances and attempt to draft your own Power of Attorney, following all of the formalities of the Power of Attorney Act of Manitoba. Do-it-yourself Powers of Attorney leave you with no insurance against your own mistakes. We do NOT notarize do-it-yourself or Powers of Attorney documents that our office did not create or write. Your work will not be reviewed by a Notary, you are on your own as to the form, content and validity of your self-drafted Power of Attorney. If you make a mistake or mistakes: A. Your intentions may not be upheld; B. Your document may not be of use re any institutions; etc. Therefore, our office does not notarize do-it-yourself power of attorney documents.

If you decide to do-it-yourself, take heed of the warnings on websites that facilitate the do-it-yourself drafting of Powers of Attorney.  Such websites usually explicitly state that they do not substitute for the assistance of a lawyer.

Does your office prepare Powers of Attorney for countries outside of Canada or Notarize Powers of Attorney for use outside of Canada? No. We prepare Manitoba Power of Attorney documents that are primarily for use within the boundaries of Manitoba. We do not prepare  or Notarize Power of Attorney documents for use in any other countries. If you want a Power of Attorney for a country other than Canada, you should contact a lawyer in that country.
